Security Guard or CCTV? How to Choose for Your Sydney Site

A security guard provides immediate response and visible deterrence. CCTV provides 24/7 recording and evidence. For some sites, one is enough. For others, you need both. SRS is one of the few Sydney companies that provides both physical guards and electronic security — so our recommendation isn’t biased toward one service. Here’s the honest decision framework.

Security guard versus CCTV — which is right for your Sydney site.

What a Guard Can Do That CCTV Cannot

  • Immediate physical response. A guard can intervene, de-escalate, call police, and secure a scene in real time. A camera records it.
  • Active deterrence. A visible guard at the entrance changes behaviour — most opportunistic intruders leave when they see a uniformed guard. A camera does not create the same psychological barrier.
  • Adaptive decision-making. A guard can assess a situation, use judgement, adjust approach, and communicate with people. A camera captures what happens — it doesn't make decisions.
  • Access control. Checking credentials, managing visitor logs, controlling who enters and exits. No camera can do this without an integrated access control system.
  • First aid response. All NSW Class 1A guards hold current First Aid. Cameras can't render assistance.

What CCTV Can Do That a Guard Cannot

  • 24/7 continuous recording. A guard works shifts. CCTV never sleeps, never blinks, never takes a break. Coverage is complete and uninterrupted.
  • Multi-location coverage simultaneously. One NVR records from 16 cameras across a building — a guard can only be in one place.
  • Evidence for police and insurance. Time-stamped video footage is admissible evidence. A guard's verbal account is important but video is definitive.
  • AI-powered detection. Modern IP cameras detect person vs vehicle vs animal, trigger alerts for line-crossing and loitering, and filter false alarms. This intelligence runs 24/7 without fatigue.
  • Lower ongoing cost. A 4-camera system costs $1,800-$2,800 one-off with no subscription vs a guard at $35,000-$45,000/year. Over 5 years, cameras cost a fraction of continuous guarding.

The Real Cost Comparison — Guard vs CCTV in Sydney

Guard hire vs CCTV installation — 5-year cost comparison, Sydney 2026.
OptionYear 1 cost5-year total cost
Static guard (overnight, 5 nights/week)$95,000–$115,000$475,000–$575,000
Mobile patrol (overnight, 5 nights/week)$10,000–$15,000$50,000–$75,000
8-camera IP CCTV (NVR, installed)$3,500–$5,500$4,500–$7,000 (incl. HDD replacement)
CCTV + mobile patrol combo$13,500–$20,500$54,500–$82,000

The cost difference is dramatic. The question isn't "which is cheaper" — it's "which addresses the actual risk." A $4,000 CCTV system that records a break-in without preventing it has saved $0 in real terms. A $95,000/year guard that prevented the same break-in has saved the cost of whatever was stolen.

Which Sites Need a Guard, Which Need CCTV, and Which Need Both

Recommended security approach by site type, Sydney 2026.
Site typeGuardCCTVReasoning
Retail shop (trading hours)✓✓Guard for active deterrence; CCTV for evidence + after-hours
Construction site (overnight)✓OptionalGuard prevents theft; cameras help but can't stop someone walking out with copper
Office building (after hours)Mobile patrol✓CCTV handles monitoring; patrol handles physical checks and alarm response
Strata building (overnight)Mobile patrol✓CCTV on common areas; patrol for physical deterrence and incident response
Warehouse (after hours)Mobile patrol✓CCTV with AI alerts; patrol as first responder to confirmed alerts
Licensed event✓ (required)OptionalGuards are legally required for crowd control; CCTV adds evidence but isn't mandated
Small home / residential—✓CCTV + alarm is sufficient; a guard is disproportionate for residential

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a security guard or CCTV better for my site?+

It depends on what you're protecting against. Guards provide immediate response and active deterrence — best for sites where preventing an incident matters more than recording it. CCTV provides 24/7 recording and evidence — best for sites where documentation, AI detection, and after-hours coverage matter. Many commercial sites need both.

Can CCTV replace a security guard?+

For some sites, yes — a residential home, a small office after hours, or a warehouse with low-value contents. For sites that need real-time intervention (retail during trading, construction with high-value materials, events with crowds), CCTV alone is insufficient. It records what happens; it doesn't prevent it.

What is cheaper — a guard or CCTV?+

CCTV is dramatically cheaper long-term. An 8-camera IP system costs $3,500-$5,500 one-off vs a static guard at $95,000-$115,000/year. Over 5 years, cameras cost ~$5,000 while a guard costs ~$500,000. But cost isn't the only factor — response capability and deterrence value differ significantly.

Does SRS provide both guards and CCTV?+

Yes — SRS is one of the few Sydney companies that provides both licensed security guards (static, mobile, event) and electronic security (CCTV, alarms, access control). This means our recommendations aren't biased toward one service — we assess your site and recommend what actually fits.

When do I need both a guard AND CCTV?+

Retail (guard for shoplifting deterrence + CCTV for evidence), commercial buildings (guard for access control + CCTV for monitoring), construction sites (guard for overnight presence + CCTV for incident documentation), and events (guard for crowd control + CCTV for coverage of large areas).

Can AI-powered CCTV replace a mobile patrol guard?+

AI CCTV with remote monitoring is approaching this capability for some low-risk sites — detecting incidents and alerting a response team. But it cannot physically check locked doors, test gates, or respond to a person on-site. For now, the best combination is AI CCTV for detection + mobile patrol for physical response to confirmed alerts.
