How Long Does EV Charger Installation Take in Sydney?
A standard single-phase EV charger install takes 3–5 hours on the day. If switchboard work is needed, add 1–2 hours. If a long cable run or conduit is required, it can stretch to a full day. The site assessment visit (before install day) takes 30–60 minutes. Here’s what happens at each stage — so you know what to expect and when your car will be charging.

Step 1: The Site Assessment Visit
Before installation day, a licensed electrician visits your property to assess:
- Switchboard condition + spare capacity
- Cable route from switchboard to charging location (distance, wall material, routing complexity)
- Mounting position for the charger (wall type, height, accessibility)
- Wi-Fi signal strength at the charger location (for smart chargers)
- Whether any switchboard upgrade is needed
Duration: 30–60 minutes. You'll receive a written quote within 1–3 business days covering the full scope (hardware + install + any switchboard work).
Step 2: On Installation Day — What Actually Happens
- Power isolation. The electrician turns off the main at your switchboard. Power will be off for 30–60 minutes during switchboard work. (If no switchboard work is needed, power stays on.)
- Cable run. The electrician runs cable from the switchboard to the charging location. This is the most time-variable step — a 5m run through plasterboard takes 30 minutes; a 20m run through brick cavity wall with external conduit takes 2–3 hours.
- Charger mounting. The wallbox is mounted at the agreed position. Typically 1.2–1.5m above ground, with the tethered cable hanging neatly on a hook or coiled at the base.
- Electrical connection + testing. The cable is terminated at both ends (switchboard breaker + charger), the dedicated circuit is tested for continuity, insulation, and RCD response. The charger is powered on and tested with a vehicle (or a test load) to confirm correct operation.
- CCEW + handover. The electrician issues a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) — lodged digitally from July 2026 in NSW. You receive a copy within 7 days. The charger app is configured and you're shown how to use it.
What Slows an Install Down
- Long cable runs (20m+). Common in Sydney homes where the switchboard is at the front and the garage is at the rear. Adds 1–2 hours.
- Brick or concrete walls. Drilling through double-brick cavity or concrete adds time and mess. Expect 30–60 minutes per wall penetration.
- Switchboard upgrade. If the board needs replacing or RCDs need adding, that's an extra 2–4 hours on top of the charger install. Some electricians schedule this as a separate day.
- Conduit installation. If cable can't be concealed inside walls (common for external runs on brick), surface-mounted conduit is installed. Neat but time-consuming — adds 30–60 minutes.
- Three-phase installations. If you're installing a 22 kW three-phase charger, the wiring and switchboard work is more complex. Expect a full day.
