EV Charger Cable Runs and Conduit Costs Sydney — What Changes the Price
If your switchboard is five metres from where the EV charger is going, the cable run usually adds $0 to $200 on top of a fixed-price install. If it’s 25 metres, on the other side of a driveway, with concrete to cut and a strata switchboard at the other end, the same job can swing to $2,500 to $6,500. Cable run is the single biggest variable in EV charger pricing — bigger than the charger itself. Here’s how the numbers break down for Sydney homes and apartments in 2026.

All figures are Sydney market estimates additional to a standard EV charger install. Distance, surface type, drilling, strata approval, and DNSP requirements change the number quickly. A site inspection is the only way to get a real quote.
Why Cable Run Is the Biggest Single Variable
Three buckets make up an EV install: hardware, install labour, and the cable path. The first two are mostly fixed. A 7kW Wallbox, Zappi or Tesla wall connector lands in a tight retail band, and labour to mount, terminate, and commission is roughly four hours regardless of location.
The variable is the cable path. A four-metre surface-mount run is twenty minutes of conduit work and a few metres of 6mm² cable. A 30-metre underground run from a strata switchboard with shared submetering is half a day of trenching, a separate sub-meter, an OC application, and 10mm² or 16mm² cable. Same charger, same commissioning, bill 4 to 5 times bigger. That’s why two homes a street apart can get wildly different quotes for what looks like the same install.
Five Cable Run Scenarios — Sydney Examples
Attached garage, switchboard in laundry — 4m run
$0 – $200 incremental
Switchboard in the laundry, garage shares a wall, charger on that shared wall. Short surface conduit, one wall penetration. Almost always rolled into the fixed-price install.
Garage at rear of block, 12m cavity run via roof

Up the wall, across the roof cavity, down to the garage wall. No trenching. Cost depends on cavity access difficulty.
Garage 22m from main board, partial trenching

Half internal cavity, half buried conduit. Cable size jumps to 10mm² to stay within AS/NZS 3000 voltage drop limits. Includes trench labour.

Surface Conduit vs Cavity vs Underground — What Each Actually Costs
Surface-mount conduit is the cleanest, cheapest run — white PVC clipped to the wall, straight to the unit. Visible, but in a garage that’s rarely an issue.
Cavity (in-wall) runs look better but cost more. The electrician fishes cable through wall and ceiling cavities, plus minor patching. Premium: $200–$500 over a surface run of the same length.
Underground conduit is the expensive end. Hand-trenching is $80–$120 per metre in soft ground, more through gravel or fill. Concrete saw-cut and reinstatement adds $300–$600 per cut.
When the Run Pushes You to Thicker Cable (and a Bigger MCB)
A 7kW single-phase EV charger draws 32A continuous. Default cable is 6mm² copper, fine up to about 20 to 25 metres. Beyond that, cable resistance drops voltage at the charger end below the AS/NZS 3000 5% voltage drop limit, and the installer has to upsize.
The next step is 10mm² — roughly 30–50% more per metre, plus larger conduit and a bigger MCB. For runs past 35 metres or three-phase, 16mm² cable comes into play. That’s why the same 30-metre run quoted by two electricians can come back $400 different — one is sizing the cable as the calc requires, the other is undersizing to win the quote and leaving you with a non-compliant install.
Trenching — The Hidden Cost of Garden and Driveway Runs
Trenching is where quotes get loose if you don’t ask for the detail:
- Hand-trench, garden or grass: $80–$120 per metre
- Hand-trench, compacted fill or gravel: $130–$200 per metre
- Concrete saw-cut, trench, and patch: $300–$600 per cut, on top of per-metre trenching
- Reinstating pavers: $50–$150 per square metre
- Exposed-aggregate or stamped concrete reinstatement: often the single most expensive line on the quote
Direct-buried conduit sits at least 600mm below finished surface (deeper under driveways), with sand bedding and warning tape above. If the run crosses council nature strip or footpath, expect a Section 138 Roads Act permit — typically $200–$600 in fees and 2 to 4 weeks.
Strata and Apartment Carparks — What Makes These Expensive
Strata bays are the most expensive cable run scenario in Sydney for three reasons:
- The switchboard is shared. Pre-2010 common-property boards rarely have spare capacity, and a shared submeter has to be fitted so the charger's electricity is billed to the lot owner, not the building.
- The cable run crosses common property. Even at 20 metres, conduit has to be cable-trayed across slab ceilings, fire-stopped through walls, and routed around existing services.
- Owners corporation approval is required. Under NSW Strata Schemes Management Act, Section 132, a registered EV charging by-law has to be passed before any common-property work. Straightforward but 3 to 8 weeks.
Strata bay installs typically land between $3,500 and $7,000 all-in — charger included — with cable run and OC overhead making up most of the gap from a standalone home install.
What a Fixed-Price Install Actually Includes
- 1Base install — short run, surface conduit. The SRS fixed-price EV install ($1,499 from) covers the most common Sydney scenario: short cable run inside an attached garage, surface-mount conduit, switchboard with spare capacity, 7kW single-phase wall unit.

- 4Trenching, reinstatement, and concrete cutting. All quoted as itemised line items. The quote you sign is the quote you pay.
- 5Strata paperwork, DNSP, sub-board if needed. Itemised and flagged at site inspection, not discovered on the day. CCEW issued and lodged on completion.
Five Questions to Ask Any EV Charger Installer Before They Quote
- What route are you proposing — cavity, surface conduit, ceiling, or external?
- What cable cross-section, and how many metres?
- Is voltage drop calculated, and what's the result?
- Will any trenching, drilling, or wall-chasing be needed?
- What does "extra" look like, and when do you flag it?
If an installer can't answer 2, 3 or 5 in plain English, the quote isn't a real quote — it's a placeholder waiting to be revised on the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the same install cost so differently between two homes?+
Cable run and access. The unit, labour, and commissioning are roughly fixed. The path between switchboard and bay is where bills swing 4 or 5 times.
Can I run my own conduit and save money?+
No. Final connection, terminations, and certification have to be done by a licensed electrician. Rough-in by an unlicensed party often fails CCEW inspection and ends up redone — costing more than the original quote.
What's voltage drop and why does it matter?+
AS/NZS 3000 caps voltage drop at 5% between source and load. Long thin runs exceed this — the installer has to upsize cable to stay compliant. Skip it and you've got a non-compliant, slower-charging, hotter-running circuit.
Will a tradesman dig my trench cheaper?+
Sometimes. Plenty of EV installers coordinate a labourer or landscaper separately for trenching and reinstatement, keeping electrical labour focused on cable and terminations.
Does the strata committee need to approve a long run?+
Yes if any common property is touched — and for apartment bays, that's almost always the case. The NSW strata EV by-law process is straightforward but takes 3 to 8 weeks depending on AGM scheduling.
