Sub-Board for an EV Charger in Sydney — When It’s Cheaper Than a Full Switchboard Upgrade

If your main switchboard is compliant but tight on space, or the charger is going on a detached garage, fitting a dedicated EV sub-board typically costs $1,200 to $2,000 — versus $2,800 to $5,500 for a full main-board upgrade. A sub-board is the right call more often than people expect. Here’s when it works, when it doesn’t, and what a proper one looks like in 2026.

What a Sub-Board Actually Is

A sub-board is a smaller secondary switchboard fed off your main board through a dedicated submain cable. It has its own enclosure, its own incoming isolator, and its own RCBO or MCB protection for whatever circuits sit downstream — here, the EV charger.

It does three useful things:

  • Isolates the EV circuit so a fault on the charger doesn’t drop the rest of the house
  • Reduces clutter on the main board when the existing one is compliant but short on DIN-rail space
  • Puts the protection close to the load — important when the charger is 15 or 20 metres from the house

A sub-board doesn’t create extra capacity. The main board still needs the headroom to feed it. What it does is run a single dedicated submain to a clean junction point near the charger — far cheaper than ripping out a compliant main board to free up two ways.

Five Scenarios Where a Sub-Board Is the Right Call

The board was renewed in the 2010s, has RCDs, has a main switch — but every DIN slot is taken. Replacing a perfectly compliant main board to fit two more breakers is wasteful. A small sub-board hung beside it solves the same problem for half the cost.

Running 32A cable from a house-side breaker out to a detached garage is expensive cable and expensive labour. Better practice: short submain to a sub-board on the garage wall, then a short final circuit to the charger. Cleaner, easier to service, easier to expand.

Apartment owners often can’t touch the building switchboard without owners-corporation approval and an engineer’s report. A separately metered sub-board fed from the unit’s own supply (where permitted) is the standard workaround.

A sub-board install is half-day to one-day work in one contained area. A full main-board swap puts the whole property dark, sometimes triggers asbestos remediation, and creates a much bigger tenant-coordination job. For an investment property, the sub-board path is almost always cleaner.

When You Still Need a Full Main Upgrade Instead

A 7kW single-phase EV charger draws roughly 32A continuous — around half a typical 63A single-phase main. A sub-board doesn’t change that arithmetic. The main board still has to carry the load.

The sub-board redistributes protection and metering; it doesn’t create capacity. So before any sub-board install, a licensed electrician runs a maximum demand calculation under AS/NZS 3000:2018 to confirm:

  • The existing consumer mains can carry the new diversified load
  • The main switch and busbar are rated for the resulting current
  • Fault loop impedance back to the network point of supply is in range

If the calc fails, the answer isn’t a sub-board — it’s an uplift to the main supply, which is separate ASP-3 work involving Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

What a Proper Install Looks Like

    IP65 or higher enclosure if mounted outdoors or in an unsealed garage. Protects against dust and water ingress — mandatory for any exposure to weather.
  2. 2
    Dedicated RCBO for the EV final circuit. Type A minimum; Type B if the charger doesn’t have built-in DC fault detection. This is the protection closest to the charger.
  3. 3
    Clearly accessible isolator switch so the charger can be killed at the sub-board in an emergency without opening the main house board.
  4. 4
    Submain cable rated for future expansion — typically 10mm² to 16mm² so a second EV or battery can be added later without replacing the cable.
  5. 5
    Clearly labelled — submain rating, RCBO size, source main board location. Required under AS/NZS 3000:2018 and makes any future work much faster.
  6. 6
    CCEW issued and lodged with NSW Fair Trading. Non-negotiable. Keep a copy with your home records. From 1 July 2026, NSW moves CCEWs to the digital eCert platform — confirm your electrician is set up for it.

Half-day to full-day install on most sites. Add half a day if a submain needs trenching to a detached garage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a sub-board still need DNSP approval?

Usually no. A sub-board fed from a compliant existing main supply is internal work. The exception is when the maximum demand calc shows the main supply itself needs an uplift — that’s separate ASP-3 work involving Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

Can I add a solar battery onto the same sub-board later?

Yes — and it’s a common future-proofing move. The trick is sizing the submain cable and sub-board capacity now for the eventual battery plus EV charger. Spending $300–$500 extra today saves a full redo later.

What if I want two EV chargers eventually?

Plan the submain at 40A or higher and use load sharing on the chargers themselves (most modern wall units support it). They coordinate so total draw never exceeds the cable rating.

Does a sub-board void my home insurance?

No. It’s standard licensed electrical work. As long as the install is done by a licensed NSW electrician and a CCEW is issued, it’s fully compliant. Keep the CCEW with your house papers.

How long does a sub-board install take?

Half a day to a full day for the sub-board itself, plus EV charger commissioning. Add half a day if a submain has to be trenched out to a detached garage.

Is a sub-board legal in NSW?

Yes. Sub-boards are explicitly addressed in AS/NZS 3000:2018 and are standard practice in Australian residential and commercial installations.
