A manual interlock kit is a mechanical plate at the switchboard that physically prevents the main switch and generator switch being on at the same time. Foolproof and legal. Roughly $200–$400 in parts; the rest is labour, the inlet socket, and feeder cable.

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) does the same job electronically — monitors mains, signals the generator, switches over, switches back when mains returns. ATS units start around $800 single-phase and run to $2,500+ for load-shedding variants.

Both must comply with AS/NZS 3010 — the Australian standard for installations supplied by transportable and standby generators. CCEW lodged with NSW Fair Trading. No exceptions.

Will a standby generator pay for itself?

Almost never on raw economics — it’s an insurance-style spend. The maths only works with very frequent outages, a home business reliant on continuous power, or critical medical equipment. For most households it’s a continuity decision, not a financial one.

Can I run a portable generator through extension cords into the house?

Legally limited and not safe for more than a single appliance on a single lead. A manual interlock at the switchboard is the correct minimum to feed the whole house. Backfeeding via a wall socket is illegal under NSW electrical safety regulations and can kill linesmen restoring the grid.

How loud is a standby generator?

60–75 dB at 7 metres unenclosed — plainly audible in a neighbouring home. An acoustic enclosure drops it to 50–60 dB (normal conversation level). Most Sydney councils require acoustic mitigation near a habitable boundary. Budget $1,200–$2,800 for an enclosure.

Will a generator power my EV charger?
